MONDAINE WATCHES

Mondaine is a family-owned Swiss watchmaking company which unlike most of the renowned and older Swiss brands was founded in the last century precisely in 1951 by Erwin Bernheim.  The original design style of the watches owed most of its influence from Swiss railway clocks which a number of Mondaine men's watches still emulate in appearance. Watches from this particular company also derive their designs and influence from modern art pieces from all over the world. The company makes watches for men under its different brand names as well as license arrangements and is also engaged in the manufacture of private label watches on behalf of several clients the world over from its factories in Biberist and Zurich in Switzerland.

Some of the company’s branding efforts include the licensing the rights to provide watches of the Camel Trophy competition a vehicle focused competition that focused on the navigation of difficult terrain by its participants in countries and continents around the world. Mondaine watches for men got the license to manufacture timepieces under this brand in 1993 and still retains it till date. Another license it holds is Swiss luxury leather goods manufacturer Bally which has had its watches manufactured by the company since the 1990’s. Several famous fashion houses with no watches of their own are known to adopt this method of licensing their brand name to be used in the manufacture of watches by renowned watchmaking outfits.

Private label watches on behalf of several global clients are also made by this well-known watch manufacturer under the individual names of the business entities who have contracted the company to engage in the production of these watches.

Mondaine bought 60% of U.S watchmaker Luminox in 2006, and thereafter gained entrance into the United States market while on the other hand Luminox benefited from expertise and also gained entry into the European markets as a result. Luminox products are exclusively sold by Mondaine in Switzerland. Other than this partnership the company has diversified internationally by opening several outlets in countries around the world over the years. It has an outpost in Hong Kong as well as Brazil while the bulk of its products in other countries are sold through a variety of arrangements.

The Swiss Federal Railways are also into partnership with Mondaine watches having had their railway clocks influence the design of the company’s watches for years. Mondaine being the official maker of the Swiss Railways watches since 1986.

The company today is owned for the most part by the founder Erwin Bernheim’s sons: Ronnie and Andre Bernheim who serve as CEO and COO of the company respectively and are regularly involved in ensuring that the company sticks to some of its known traditions as well as its unique watchmaking style which has garnered several awards over the years in the country.

Mondaine’s primary name brands go under the names “Mondaine” and the “M-Watch” and while they might not particularly be classified under the luxury category of some of Switzerland’s most popular watchmakers, they are very much a household name in the country and have been a vivid part of everyday life in Switzerland for decades.
